Chief Justice Warren Winkler joins Arbitration Place

The recently retired Chief Justice of Ontario, Warren Winkler, is joining Toronto’s Arbitration Place as a resident mediator and arbitrator.

Winkler, who has been called “Canada’s mediator” for his knack of resolving difficult disputes, spent 14 years as a trial judge in the Superior Court of Justice before taking the reins of the Court of Appeal in 2007.

During that time, he mediated many national and international disputes, including matter involving the Air Canada restructuring, the Ontario Hydro and Power Workers, the Windsor-Michigan Tunnel, and the CanWest/Shaw Cable restructuring. He has heard many major class action proceedings including cases involving Bre-X, hepatitis C, breast implants, tobacco,  Walkerton’s tainted water, mad cow disease, and native residential schools.

Winkler is the recipient of The International Academy of Mediators’ Lifetime Achievement Award, has received honorary doctorates from the Law Society of Upper Canada and from eight Canadian universities, and is the  Honourary Chair of the Winkler Institute for Dispute Resolution, established by Osgoode Hall Law School in his name.
